Chapter Nine

Sleep came and went in the blink of an eye. Every noise and whisper pulled me from my attempts to rest. As I kicked off a blanket that had been placed on me while I slept, Aeden was placing soup and tea beside me. He didn’t need to say the words for me to know I had to eat or I’d run out of energy. I was empty, completely drained, as if the Gods had reached down and wrung out everything good like a dish rag.

I glanced around the room. “Where did Finn go?”

“He’s patrolling. I could call him back if you’d prefer?”

“No. I just didn’t hear him leave. You guys move like the wind.”

“We’re not nearly that loud.” Aeden smiled. He pushed the bowl of soup on the table beside me a little closer as a hint to eat it. “It is chicken. It has noodles made by Nix. They were in your private kitchen. He gave me a package a couple weeks ago. I traded him pears.”

“It sounds like Nix is quite the bootlegger around here.” I laughed, thinking of Nix smuggling goods across borders for jams and cakes. “Thank you, Aeden. Did you eat?”

“I did. Not any of your soup, though. I do not eat meat.”

“How are you built like a mountain and don’t eat meat?” I asked. “I think you’re the first Fae I’ve met who doesn’t eat meat.”

“Most Aos Si do not consume animals. We eat products of animals but not the creatures themselves,” he answered. “When your very existence brings death to your door at a constant, you stop doing a lot of things that result in death, such as killing for food.”

“Makes sense why Zephyr has such an enormous garden,” I answered. I leaned back and glanced into the dining room. “What would you do, Aeden?”

“I would need you to be specific. There are many things you could be referring to.”

“Would you trust Faolan and Oisin?” I asked.

“I don’t think it’s a matter of trust, my lady. You must ask yourself, how useful are they to you? Can you ensure they will remain useful? And lastly, what are you willing to do should they no longer be useful to you?”

“This would be a hell of a lot easier if Zeph or Solas were here. Solas can do this in his sleep.”

“Why?” he asked. “Faolan and Oisin’s use doesn’t grow or diminish depending on who else is in the room making the decision. And I truly do think they fear you above everyone else.”

“Because they would know what to do, and I don’t,” I answered.

“I believe you know what to do. You’re merely struggling with the tough decisions. Are you seeking Zephyr and Solas because you’d rather they make the choices for you? Or are you seeking someone to still love you after you’ve made the call?”

“Good point,” I replied. “It’s always easier when someone else makes the tough decisions and even better when you don’t feel like a monster afterward.”

“Rest easy. Both will still love you, even if you slaughter your way through the courts to get to them.
